  • Spencer radio host TJ Johnson returned early Thursday from Puerto Vallarta after days stranded by flight cancellations and unrest; his arrival at Minneapolis St Paul International Airport was warmly welcomed by colleagues at MORE 104.9 and the community as he resumed his morning show.  KTIV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Coney Island will reopen at 2519 Hamilton Blvd in mid-April with its original recipe and owner George Margeas (who makes chili and serves guests) as part of a 1950s diner revival featuring a drive-thru and jukebox.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sioux City Community Theatre will perform Murder on the Orient Express, based on Agatha Christie’s novel, beginning Friday, March 6 at 1401 Riverside Blvd with multiple showtimes through March (tickets available online or by phone).  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux City Community Schools named Jim Vanderloo interim superintendent on Feb. 26 after Dr. Juan Córdova resigned; his appointment is effective immediately and will last until June 30 (the board may extend his term through the next school year).  KTIV
  • Students at West Middle School met with Mayor Pro-Tem Julie Schoenherr to share persuasive essays proposing new hangout spaces after a class discussion on social media's impact + they suggested ideas like opening a gym so peers can safely gather in Sioux City.  KTIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City residents are urged to follow fire safety guidelines as warm, dry, windy weather can spread fires quickly; the National Weather Service (NWS) advises proper cigarette disposal, equipment checks, and caution with farm equipment to prevent wildfires.  KTIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a law on Thursday that boosts state aid to public schools by 2% and adds $82 million, even though districts had requested a 5% increase — the new funding aims to support schools amid rising costs.  KTIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • LifeServe Blood Center is in critical need of blood donations of all types to serve 179 hospitals in Iowa + Nebraska + South Dakota + Illinois. The Sioux City center near Southern Hills Mall and mobile drives across Siouxland welcome walk-ins.  KTIV
  • Siouxland donor Peggy Hopp reached a milestone when she donated her 100th gallon of blood on Thursday, Feb. 26. The 76-year-old, who has donated for over 50 years, helped save nearly 2,400 lives.  KTIV
