COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Food Truck Fridays will return this summer starting June 5 in Sioux City. Due to construction near 6th and Pearl, the event will take place at a new location to be announced—food truck registration begins the second week of April on a first come, first served basis. KTIV
- ➤ Fifteen local groups received a $50,000 grant from Missouri River Historical Development on Thursday to fund free or low-cost events in Woodbury County, including celebrations and festivals in communities like Correctionville and Cushing. The grant program supports projects that boost local pride & community engagement. KTIV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Sergeant Bluff-Luton school board offered Sioux City's associate superintendent Angela Bemus a contract to serve as primary school principal starting this summer & replacing the retiring incumbent. KTIV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ First Lieutenant Izaak Hoey returned from a nine-month deployment in Syria last Thursday and resumed his role as the School Resource Officer at Sioux Center Christian School. He balanced home-buying tasks during his absence with support from his fiancée (Kaylee). KTIV
- ➤ Iowa Supreme Court heard oral arguments Tuesday in a dispute involving former Sioux City Community Schools superintendent Paul R. Gausman and board members over a closed-door meeting; a lower court awarded damages and attorney fees, and appeals now await a ruling later this year. KTIV
- ➤ Sioux City officials now require food trucks to install fire suppression systems and obtain permits as part of the new 2024 International Fire Code regulations. Some vendors, such as Sonrisas Food Truck (owned by Jackie and Francisco Huerta), are already scheduling inspections to display their safety sticker. KTIV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Iowa families urge lawmakers to allocate $3 million for pediatric cancer research as a House subcommittee reviews the bill with final budget decisions due in about three weeks. Advocates say the funding could improve treatments for 100 children diagnosed with cancer each year — a key step for care. KTIV
- ➤ A new report released Wednesday by the Harkin Institute and Iowa Environmental Council found that environmental pollutants including pesticides, PFAS, nitrate + radon are linked to Iowa’s rising cancer rates and urged lawmakers to act.
