- ➤ Camp High Hopes has expanded its summer day camp to welcome all children ages 5 to 12—not just those with disabilities—and opened registration for sessions running Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each week from June through August where campers will enjoy outdoor activities such as archery, canoeing and fishing. - ➤ Edward Motz, a late Sioux City Army veteran, earned medals including the WWII Victory Medal, WWII Honorable Service Lapel button, Good Conduct Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal—medals that were presented to his family to honor his service. Sioux City Journal
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Sioux City Fire Rescue told residents not to burn due to a red flag warning after firefighters responded at 1:09 p.m. on Mar 27 to a grass fire on West 41st Street that started from a burn pile and burned roughly 7 to 10 acres—no injuries were reported. SiouxlandProud
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Thomas Popp, 62, pleaded not guilty on March 27 to first-degree murder charges for the 1983 killing of Terri McCauley in Sioux City—he remains in custody on a $3 million bond and will stand trial on June 3. SiouxlandProud
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Briar Cliff will celebrate 50 years of Social Work Accreditation with a lecture series that includes a free public program by alum Barb Newhouse as part of the Sister Muriel Ford Lectureship — the event honors the school’s commitment to social work education. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ Students at Sioux City Career Academy nearly finished building a 1,500-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home that offers room for a basement extension— the project was completed by 18 seniors and 26 juniors, and community members can bid on the house until May 9. SiouxlandProud
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Sioux City Council will vote on a settlement agreement with River City Hospitality on Monday so the city can repair its Marina ahead of the 2025 boating season. The city applied for a temporary injunction on March 3 (to allow repairs) since the Marina is city-owned. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ A bill passed this week by the Iowa Senate could jeopardize Sioux City's newly created diversity and inclusion coordinator position—Mayor Bob Scott, who voted against creating the office, said he was not surprised by the move. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ Woodbury County supervisors are considering a hiring freeze to address fiscal year 2026 budget constraints & several department heads say current openings are key to maintaining county operations. Sioux City Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ KTIV’s Shifting the Scale series follows four Sioux City patients who lost a lot of weight after surgery and now come for regular check-ups—dietician Megan Cleveland explained that patients learn to eat slower while nurse Kathy Hart noted many recover more easily than expected. Patients like Jennifer Anderson, Travis, Doug Boetger, and Matti Smith have lost over 100 pounds and say the CNOS team changed their lives. KTIV
