- ➤ Today, the Food Bank of Siouxland said that cuts to two USDA programs will cause it to lose 70,000 pounds of food and remove many protein items, reducing fresh choices for residents over the summer. The bank is asking state lawmakers to reinstate the Choose Iowa program—and is seeking volunteers for an upcoming food drive. SiouxlandProud
- ➤ Women Aware of Siouxland held its 40th annual Women of Excellence Awards Ceremony Friday night at the South Sioux City Marriott Riverfront, honoring nine women and one man for their contributions across the tri-state community—Katie Colling became the first recipient of the Flora M. Lee Keeper of the Dream Award named for a local civil rights icon. Sioux City Journal

- ➤ Sioux City woman charged with animal neglect received probation after officers removed four pit bull mix dogs (aged 4 months to 3 years) that appeared extremely thin with visible ribs and had infestations of fleas and worms. Sioux City Journal

- ➤ Sioux City officials have opposed an Iowa House study bill that would end a tax credit which helped fuel local economic growth for 19 years. They highlighted the Seaboard Triumph pork plant (one of the most prominent projects benefiting from the credit) as a key example of its positive impact. Sioux City Journal
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cuts to staff and fewer weather balloon launches at the National Weather Service have left Sioux City forecasters worried as missing data—key for spotting severe storms—could lower forecast accuracy during this severe weather season. KTIV
- ➤ K9 Rocky of the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office received a bullet and stab protective vest — sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. — to help protect him during his duties. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ The Iowa National Guard is planning send off ceremonies in Siouxland from May 28—May 30 for more than 1,800 soldiers deploying overseas as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. Two town halls will be held on April 4—one at Sioux City Armory at 9 a.m. and another at Le Mars Armory at noon to provide information for families and employers. KTIV
- ➤ Residents in Rock Valley are still recovering from last summer’s flood that left many homes uninhabitable—FEMA funds have helped some residents renovate and move back. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced plans on Monday to eliminate FEMA—raising concerns over future disaster recovery. SiouxlandProud
- ➤ Iowa lawmakers passed a bill on March 29 that would require able-bodied adults on Medicaid to work 80 hours per month, risking coverage loss for around 32,000 Iowans if they do not meet the requirement once the law is approved. The bill—which offers exemptions for seniors, children, and those with health issues—now awaits Governor Reynolds’ decision and federal waiver approval. KTIV
