COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Southern Hills Mall has updated its rules so kids under 16 must be with a parent or guardian over 21—employees under 16 must go directly to work upon entering. The policy, which includes ID checks and specific guidelines for escorts and exempt stores like Scheels and AMC, goes into effect today.  SiouxlandProud

CRIME NEWS

  • A child reported missing on Thursday was found by the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office—last seen at 3:15 p.m. at 246 6th St NE in Sioux Center.  SiouxlandProud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary J. Treglia Community House and Mary Elizabeth Child Care & Preschool have joined forces to form the Mary Education Partnership to share a teacher and offer extended care for children ages 2 to 5 and kindergarteners. The partnership—spurred by a local teacher shortage—provides student transportation with a new van funded by an MHRD grant and now accepts applications for summer classes and the 2025-26 school year.  KTIV
  • Sioux City North High School student Emma Oleson was named the 2025 Iowa Poetry Out Loud champion and will advance to nationals—Jefferson High School student Teonna Randle was named the South Dakota champion.  Sioux City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City said on Thursday it received a $500K state grant—funds from the Wastewater and Drinking Water Treatment Financial Assistance Program—that will support its wastewater treatment plant facility plan.  Sioux City Journal
  • On March 24, Representative Feenstra’s office presented six medals and pins to the family of World War II veteran Edward Motz in Sioux City—awarding him honors such as the Bronze Star Attachment and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. His sons Denny and Robert and grandson Curtis Motz accepted the awards, and the representative urged veteran families to seek help with Veterans Affairs.  SiouxlandProud
  • Federal officials reorganized LIHEAP by closing some offices and laying off staff, but the Community Action Agency of Siouxland is still accepting applications and expects the funding to come through—90% of the money has already been released while the final 10% may be delayed. Executive Director Jean Logan said the agency has processed over 2,700 household applications and will manage any delays to ensure heating assistance is available through September 30 and for the winter season ending April 30.  KTIV
  • Sioux City has received a $500,000 grant from Iowa to improve its wastewater treatment plant using funds from the Wastewater & Drinking Water Treatment Financial Assistance Program + the city said phase 1 of the $470 million project will begin next year with further work planned to boost capacity and protect Missouri River water quality.  SiouxlandProud
  • Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird warned Iowans that their genetic data may soon be at risk because 23andMe is selling its assets after filing for bankruptcy — her office advised residents to download and delete their data and to destroy their test samples to protect their privacy.  SiouxlandProud
  • Jean Logan, executive director of Community Action Agency of Siouxland, said LIHEAP funding will not be cut by federal layoffs—90% of the funds have already been sent to states. She added that if the remaining funds are delayed, local families can still apply for help until April 30.  SiouxlandProud
