COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Legion and Sons of the American Legion Post 724 are hosting a pork chop dinner today at Legion Hall on Oak Street in Brunsville from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The event will support the Midwest Honor Flight departing June 3 as 85 veterans are expected to board and organizers aim to raise $200,000—pork chops are provided by Plymouth County Pork Producers.  SiouxlandProud
  • A special program took place on Thursday at the Food Bank of Siouxland in Sioux City where an honorary first bag ceremony for the 'Scouting for Food' drive was held—Mayor Pro-Tem Dan Moore received the first two bags donated by Troop 204. The scouts, who have collected over 2,500 lbs and aim for more than 6,000 lbs, will pick up donations today while community members drop off food at local Hy-Vees and a Fareway.  SiouxlandProud
  • Southern Hills Mall in Sioux City started a new youth escort rule on Friday that requires visitors under 16 to show proof of age and be with a parent or guardian aged 21 or older. Mall management said the rule was made to address a rise in disruptions, and police reported they responded to 73 calls this year — mostly for theft and shoplifting.  KTIV

CRIME NEWS

  • A South Sioux City woman accused of aiding her estranged husband in a murder case has had her trial date set for June 18 at 9 a.m.—with a final pre-trial conference scheduled for May 2 as she faces charges of accessory to a felony, compounding a felony, and false reporting.  SiouxlandProud

CULTURE NEWS

  • June Jam will return downtown on June 21—featuring live local music, vendors, and community activities from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Historic 4th Street between Floyd Boulevard and Virginia Street. Vendors and sponsors must register by May 3—spaces are limited.  KTIV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Two northwest Iowa communities have received state funds to boost their local economies. Sibley Housing and Development Corporation got a $10,000 grant to plan a new residential project addressing a housing shortage while Calhoun County Economic Development received $10,000 to develop a marketing strategy to attract businesses + the funds come from the Governor's Empower Rural Iowa Initiative BOOST program.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sioux City Council will review a $100,000 grant proposal for restoring the historic Hauff Sporting Goods building at 712 Pierce St.—the renovation will update key systems while preserving original brick walls as it aims to house a bridal shop and additional small business spaces. Councilman Matthew O'Kane also moved to reopen discussion on a $140,000 budget cut for the Human Rights Commission, and the council approved opening debate on the matter at its April 7 meeting.  Sioux City Journal
  • Highway 75 is closing today from 5th St. S near Axis Apartments to 2nd St. N near Coop Gas, with the 5th St. S intersection remaining open+ truck traffic rerouted via 20th St. SE. Crews are installing sidewalks, streetlights and upgrading the median as businesses remain accessible via side streets+ the 2nd St. N intersection will close later this month for utility work.  Sioux Country Radio
