COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 9, employees at Sterling of North Sioux City worked with MercyOne Siouxland Child Advocacy Center to make 30 tie blankets for children who have faced abuse. The blankets offered comfort to these children and showed strong local support for child safety.  SiouxlandProud

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Multiple fire crews are responding to a fire at the Meyers Enterprises building in the 500 block of Old Sawmill Road in South Sioux City—smoke and flames were seen, the road has been blocked, and no injuries were reported as the cause remains undetermined.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jersey Mike’s Subs opened its first Sioux City location on Wednesday at 3070 Floyd Boulevard, beginning service at 10 a.m. Special fundraising coupons let customers donate $3 to Sioux City North High School until April 13—long wait times were reported.  SiouxlandProud
  • U.S. Cellular laid off five Sioux City workers as part of nearly 500 job cuts statewide—company officials said many may soon find jobs at T-Mobile.  Sioux City Journal
  • Officials held a ribbon cutting on Tuesday for the new DoubleTree by Hilton Sioux City hotel and its adjoining 1854 Grille restaurant; the hotel—formerly a Holiday Inn and Riverside Plaza Hotel rebuilt over 3 1/2 years with all 120 rooms renovated—opened in February while the restaurant, named for Sioux City’s founding year and featuring historic photos, opened in March.  SiouxlandProud

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students took a special preview trip outside the Tyson Events Center to see the Abu Bekr Shrine Circus, where they watched an elephant eat and learned about the event—Chief Rabban Jeremy Robinson said the experience was memorable. The circus will begin today at 6:30 p.m. with Travis Chinn as the honorary ring master—Robinson added that they plan to offer more events like this in the future.  SiouxlandProud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Roughly 450 students from northwest Iowa gathered in Sioux City on Wednesday to explore STEM jobs at a local festival. The event was held at the 185th Air Refueling Wing, Oracle Aviation — and the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation, where students engaged with 40 hands-on exhibits showing job paths like nursing and piloting.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Sioux City Police Department held a town hall meeting at the Public Museum where officers talked about community partnerships, a fall in crime numbers, and future plans. Community members shared local concerns to help guide the department’s work—an approach stressed by Lieutenant Jeremy McClure.  SiouxlandProud
  • A group of Iowans including a fly fisherman, a Floyd County resident, and a farm heir filed a lawsuit in Polk County District Court claiming Governor Kim Reynolds did not have the power to force agencies to change rules with Executive Order 10 — the suit says that such changes remove protections for landowners and limit useful public input.  SiouxlandProud
