COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Since January, Save the Kitties has trapped and neutered 500 stray cats in Siouxland as part of its TNR efforts. The volunteer group will need more drivers and support from local businesses + community members to transport cats for surgery. KTIV
- ➤ United Way of Siouxland raised $2.97 million on Wednesday, Apr. 15 from 9,000 donors and will fund 23 programs that boost mental health support, financial literacy, childcare and youth reading to benefit over 2,600 residents — strengthening local services. KTIV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Sioux City Community Schools board is set to announce superintendent finalists today; interim superintendent Jim Vanderloo (a 34-year veteran) discussed his goals and experience during a KTIV interview. KTIV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ UnityPoint Health will hold active shooter drills today and Friday at its north building with Iowa State Troopers, the Sioux City Police Department (SCPD) and the Western Iowa Tech Community College Police Academy to train staff for emergencies. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ The Sioux City Parks and Recreation Board recommended vacating Dinosaur Park on April 1 due to ongoing undesirable activities + the park at 1515 Nebraska Street will undergo review by the Planning and Zoning Commission before a final decision is made. KTIV
- ➤ Iowa lawmakers advanced a bill Tuesday that would add a 5-cent per unit tax on vapor products to fund up to $3 million for pediatric cancer research beginning fiscal year 2028 (the measure passed committee and moves to the Senate floor). Some critics worry it will not curb nicotine use. KTIV
- ➤ Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds issued a disaster proclamation on Wednesday for five counties following Monday's severe storms that caused hail damage in Remsen and structural losses in Graettinger (including Plymouth, Palo Alto and Clay counties), activating state recovery programs and offering repair grants.
