COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of women from five local churches meets on the second Monday of each month to sew Feminine Hygiene Dignity Kits that help young women in South Africa attend school. The handmade kits, crafted from fabric scraps and designed to last three years, are sent to Blessman International headquarters in Des Moines for mission trips—community members are welcome to join the next session.  KTIV
  • Bishop R. Walker Nickless, who led Sioux City's Diocese for nearly 20 years, reflected on his bittersweet journey as he stepped down after submitting his resignation in May 2022. Bishop-elect John Keehner of Youngstown will be ordained on May 1 at the Cathedral of the Epiphany + Nickless will stay on as a resource during the transition.  Sioux City Journal

  • Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez was sentenced in Sioux City after he illegally re-entered the U.S. following his 2019 deportation from Texas.  Sioux City Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Sioux City’s New Stage Players—partnering with the Penguin Project—will present Disney’s Aladdin: Kids as their fifth production featuring young actors with Down’s syndrome, autism, Asperger’s and other conditions, giving them a chance to shine.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Dakota Valley School District announced that it offered Garrett Schmidt a contract to serve as superintendent for the 2025–26 school year.  Sioux City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City Fire Rescue has earned accreditation that places it in the top 1% of over 29,000 fire departments nationwide + fewer than 350 departments have received the honor from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.  Sioux City Journal
  • The Sioux City Wastewater Treatment Plant Advisory Committee met on Thursday to review Phase I of a project that will boost equipment capacity and add odor control to reduce sewer smells. Officials said once designs finish, a contractor will set a maximum price and the committee will seek funding so construction can start early next year.  KTIV
  • Iowa District 1 Senator Rocky De Witt of Lawton announced he has pancreatic cancer. The former Woodbury County Supervisor is missing the current legislative session in Des Moines — he is keeping track of the developments.  Sioux City Journal
