COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, local McDonald's owner-operators presented a check for over $6,500 from the Shamrock Shake fundraiser to Ronald McDonald House Charities in Siouxland — the funds will help support expanded services for families with children receiving care.  KTIV
  • Officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration & local law enforcement agencies in Sioux City will host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday to let residents safely dispose of unused prescription drugs. Drop-off sites include Hy-Vee on Hamilton Boulevard, Hy-Vee on Gordon Drive, Drilling Pharmacy on Morningside Avenue, Hy-Vee on Cornhusker Drive, and the Dakota County Law Enforcement Center in Dakota City.  SiouxlandProud

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Officials responded to a house fire on the 1700 block of W. 4th Street yesterday at around 12:43 p.m.—a caller spotted smoke and officials believe a nearby smoking incident caused damage to the home's outer wall, though no one was injured and the home was not red-tagged.  SiouxlandProud

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sioux City Historic Preservation Week will have a walking tour led by Tom Munson at 6 p.m. May 6 at the Sioux City Public Museum that shows three old motor mart buildings— the Warnock/Benson Building now called Benson Lofts, the Wetmore Building, and the Commerce Building now home to Bluebird Flats— as part of events running May 5-10.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Siouxland Christian is building a new facility for its 7th to 12th graders and work has progressed quickly since construction started in February; phase one of the $11 million project will complete by August—providing the space needed for staff and students to grow.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislation to speed up court rulings on free speech challenges went to the governor’s desk Thursday after years of stalled efforts and is expected to help protect local media from costly lawsuits. Lawmakers including Rep. Steve Holt praised the bill for its First Amendment protections — a move aimed at safeguarding community newspapers.  SiouxlandProud
