COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A certified mahjong instructor revived a local group to bring seniors together for weekly competition at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations. The group, open to adults 18 and older, meets Thursday at 11 a.m. as players learn and enjoy the classic tile game.  KTIV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Sioux City's iconic Coney Island reopened Tuesday, April 28 at 2519 Hamilton Blvd, serving classic hot dogs with a drive-through option. Owner Joel Magee said the new location features a 50-foot mural by the Sioux City Public Museum — a nod to nearly 100 years of local history.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Sioux City drivers see Prospect Hill every day but may not know its rich past. A 1913 marker honors 1869 Presbyterian missionaries while the hill once hosted the first July 4 celebration and a small beer garden.  KTIV
  • Crews began demolishing the historic Army Air Base chapel outside the Sioux Gateway Airport this week and saved elements for a planned 3D exhibit at Mid America air museum while the property is set for redevelopment. Demolition is expected to finish by week's end with the exhibit opening next year.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Terry Lindsay has been approved as the new president of Western Iowa Tech Community College and will take office Monday, July 6. He brings 32 years of higher education experience, including serving as vice president for Student Affairs at Albany State University (Albany, GA).  KTIV
  • A Nebraska high school senior (Tiala Luong) fought for her right to wear indigenous regalia at graduation when school rules disallowed a decorated cap and gown; the school now supports a state law protecting tribal dress. The ceremony is scheduled for May 17 at Tyson Events Center.  KTIV
  • Sioux City Public Schools hosted forums on April 29 (4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) at district headquarters on Fourth and Jackson to let community members question the three superintendent finalists. The school board will review feedback in closed session starting May 4 to choose a leader set to begin July 1.  KTIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. House passed a new Farm Bill on Thursday, Apr. 30 that expands crop insurance and invests in rural broadband—local representatives noted the measure supports farming after eight years without a full bill. It now awaits Senate approval before moving to the President.  KTIV
  • Former Sioux City businessman and Gateway Computer co-founder Ted Waitt testified before the House Oversight Committee in Washington D.C. on April 30, providing his account related to past associations with Ghislaine Maxwell (he is not accused of wrongdoing) during her investigation.  KTIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hopp from Moville has donated over 100 gallons of blood over years of regular visits to the blood center. She donates blood, plasma or platelets every two months and now holds an inspiring record in community health.  Sioux City Journal
