COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Sioux City approved its first dedicated dog park on Monday, May 4 at a cost of about $56,000, with plans to build on over an acre along Streeter Drive south of the water treatment plant and construction set to start in June and finish by August.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Sioux City Public Museum will host the 35th annual Sioux City History Projects reception on Saturday, May 9 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Ninety-four students will be honored with blue ribbons and special awards for their local history projects.  KTIV
  • The school board met on May 5 but did not choose a permanent superintendent + Interim superintendent Jim Vanderloo, appointed in February, remains in charge as the district continues its search.  KTIV
  • Students from Briar Cliff University & Pierce Community Schools met on Wednesday, May 6 at Briar Cliff University after a year-long exchange of handwritten letters. The pen pal project helped elementary and college students build connections for future classrooms.  KTIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City City Council approved a seven-year naming rights deal with Security National Bank to rename the baseball field at Lewis and Clark Park—new branding will be visible as soon as Tuesday.  KTIV
  • Today, the Department of Justice and Agriculture announced an investigation into the meat packing industry by four companies (accounting for 85% of the market) as local lawmakers and farmers push for fair competition.  KTIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Harvey Dahm, a newborn transferred to St. Luke’s after a heart test showed breathing problems, received extra care with a NICU livestream system funded by the Children’s Miracle Network. His family can watch him from Early, 70 miles away.  KTIV
  • At UnityPoint Health-St. Luke's Foot and Ankle Clinic, Dr. Kosta Antonopoulos treats foot and ankle pain with non-operative methods and urges patients to seek care early so that issues in the knee, hip or back do not develop. The clinic serves all ages, including kids and older adults.  KTIV
  • Braylee Elsbecker, a 14-year-old from Sgt. Bluff, overcame early hospital stays and now thrives in sports and dance on her birthday. Her family thanks Children’s Miracle Network for support and participates in its mediathon (May 5 through today) to raise funds for pediatric care in Siouxland.  KTIV
