CRIME NEWS

  • Sioux City animal control busted a fake dog adoption ring when a tip from Cindy Rarrat on May 1 led investigators to several dogs living in a red-tagged home off West 19th Street—raising concerns about illegal pet housing.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dordt University will hold two commencement ceremonies on May 9th to honor its undergraduate and graduate students at the B.J. Haan Auditorium, with the undergraduate event starting at 9:30 a.m. and the Master’s ceremony beginning at 2 p.m.—both events will be livestreamed for remote viewers.  Sioux Country Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today the state House advanced a budget bill that cuts about $2.1 million from public universities by eliminating funds for DEI programs while boosting community college spending by $8 million to $243.9 million. Lawmakers said the change is a cleanup—cost savings used to hold spending steady—as talks with the Senate continue over a state budget that will start July 1.  Sioux City Journal
  • On Tuesday, the historic A-7D Corsair II fighter jet was sling loaded by a U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter and flown to the Air National Guard 185th unit at Martin Field+ officials say the move will help prepare the aircraft for future public display.  Sioux City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Five nurses were honored at a ceremony presented by Bruce Miller with Perla Solis—manager of nursing operations at UnityPoint Health and Advance Correctional Health Care—among those recognized for their dedicated service. Solis earned a Bachelor’s in Nursing and oversees staffing and patient care operations to ensure quality care.  Sioux City Journal
  • Sioux City doctors now use a new ultrasound machine funded by the Children’s Miracle Network that detects fetal conditions earlier—helping them diagnose at 12 to 15 weeks, while plans are underway at Sunnybrook to purchase a Spot Vision Screener for faster vision checks during this year’s Mediathon. The improvements aim to enhance care for patients ranging from young children to nonverbal adults.  KTIV
