COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Crittenton Center invites donations this Mother’s Day weekend by asking for funds to provide new books+toys, hygiene kits and other supplies for the 23 children they care for, many of whom miss their mothers due to abuse, domestic violence or loss. People can also honor a mother or mother figure by having a card sent in her name to support the center’s efforts.  KTIV
  • Downtown Partners is launching the first First Fridays event series on June 6 to boost downtown energy with live music, art and food trucks — the series will run on the first Friday of each month through October and feature pop-up events that support local businesses.  SiouxlandProud
  • La Familia Nightclub will host the La Familia Summer Jam Block Party on June 7 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at 420 Jackson Street — featuring Atlanta legends Gorilla Zoe, Lil Scrappy, and Yung Joe — and the event will offer street food vendors, live DJ sets, and surprises.  SiouxlandProud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northwest Iowa Community College received a $15,000 donation for its Powerline program from North West Rural Electric Cooperative and Basin Electric Power Cooperative — a joint gift that underscores a long-standing partnership — and the funds will support training for skilled lineworkers who power local homes and businesses.  Sioux Country Radio

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City Parks and Recreation held a prescribed burn at Prairie Park on May 9th to promote prairie grass regrowth and remove invasive dogwood trees—weather conditions affected scheduling. The next burn is scheduled for next spring.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new service called Highway Helper is now assisting stranded motorists on Interstate 29 — from the South Dakota border to Salix — on Highway 20 from Lawton and on Highway 75 south of Hinton. Operated by a private contractor for the Iowa DOT, it will offer free help with jump starting, fuel delivery, and debris removal Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.  SiouxlandProud
  • The City of Sioux City Engineering Division announced the West Street Bridge replacement project that will close the bridge to all traffic on May 19; the closure will last until mid-October (detour routes run via East Loop Road, West Loop Road and K18S) and is funded by the City Highway Bridge Program and local funds.  SiouxlandProud

HEALTH NEWS

  • On May 4, the free 11th Annual Rockin’ for a Cure Pete Goede ALS Benefit Concert raised over $40,000 with a full day of music and auctions at the Anthem inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Sioux City — the funds will help ALS of the Heartland support local families facing Lou Gehrig’s disease.  SiouxlandProud
