COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Intense storms hit Salix on Sunday, May 17, damaging power lines and buildings; Salix Fire + Rescue opened its storm shelter for residents. Crews began damage assessments Monday morning and residents can drop off tree limbs at the gravel lot at 260th + Barnett.  KTIV
  • Registrations are now accepted for SC's Independence Day Parade (organizers urge community members to join) and interested residents are encouraged to register as the event gathers plans for a festive celebration.  Sioux City Journal

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Sunday’s high winds left 13,000 customers without power—including over 1,300 in Cherokee County—and firefighters responded to 10+ calls about downed lines that can energize trees, warning residents to stay alert as another storm is possible Monday.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 14th annual Siouxland Asian Festival will feature live music by Fabulous Fitty, arts and crafts vendors, a kid's zone and nine food vendors in Sioux City. Organizers expect the event to be the largest festival to date.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nearly 100 nursing students graduated Saturday from the University of Iowa as many weigh whether to stay amid a persistent nursing shortage. Some plan to leave while others choose to work at UI Hospitals where the program eased their transition plus the issue was raised with state lawmakers.  KTIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service said on Monday that some tornado reports from Sunday evening in the Sioux City metro were preliminarily confirmed — most were very brief and a few may have been gustnadoes.  Sioux City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Veteran John Thompson launched Salute to the Fallen to reduce veteran suicides and help Iowa families by turning a refurbished ambulance into the Guardian Response Unit—a mobile resource offering crisis support and mental health resources statewide. The nonprofit is raising funds to complete the unit and expand its life-saving efforts.  KTIV
