COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 4,000 flags were placed on veterans’ graves at Memorial Park Cemetery last Thursday, May 22, honoring fallen soldiers in what organizers said is the largest turnout since the tradition began. Commander René LaPierre said 65 volunteers helped distribute around 4,500 flags—demonstrating the community’s deep military pride.  KTIV
  • Registration for the 29th Annual River—Cade Youth Fishing Derby is open for kids ages 4 to 12 and costs $5. The event will be held at Bacon Creek Park on Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to noon—and families should register soon at Sioux City Bomgaars locations because spots are limited.  SiouxlandProud
  • The Boat House bar in Sioux City is starting a free axe throwing tournament every Wednesday. Signups will begin at 5:30 p.m. and practice will run from 6:30 to 7 p.m.—manager Ryan Lefdal said the tournament will feature two games using double elimination—.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • For Memorial Day on May 26, many stores and fast-food restaurants in Sioux City will open with normal hours, but banks, post offices, Costco, and Raising Cane’s will be closed while others will have shortened hours—shoppers should call ahead to confirm details.  SiouxlandProud

CRIME NEWS

  • A Sioux City gang member was arrested Thursday evening—after a brief standoff on 21st Street, authorities said.  Sioux City Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Missouri River Historical Development awarded $500K in grants on May 22nd to 33 local organizations to support economic development, human and health services, civic projects, leisure, and education in Siouxland. The funds—given to groups in Woodbury, Cherokee, Crawford, Ida, Monona, and Plymouth counties plus Dakota County recipients—boosted community services.  SiouxlandProud

  • Sioux City Marina will soon open under a new operator—general manager Jason Addington said work to prepare the city-owned facility is complete.  Sioux City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Siouxland District Health is offering free measles shots to help protect the community from a possible outbreak—this free service aims to guard residents against the highly contagious disease that can lead to serious complications.  Sioux City Journal
