COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dozens of volunteers placed 4,000 flags on veterans’ graves at Memorial Park Cemetery on May 21 ahead of Memorial Day. The American Legion organizes the annual event to honor local veterans and support families who cannot visit in person (as noted by longtime volunteer Leonard Daniels).  KTIV
  • After a theft led to a $1,200 loss at the Railroad Museum, locals donated more than $12,000 and supported improvements to its security (including welded lock boxes and camera plans). The museum will host its Gearhead Gala, a free motorcycle and car show, on Saturday, June 13.  KTIV
  • A bridge near Maurice was dedicated yesterday to honor fallen Marine Lance Corporal William 'B. Jay' Leusink, who was killed in Iraq 20-year ago. The sign was installed amid rainy weather by the Iowa Department of Transportation near the Highway 75 and Highway 10 junction.  KTIV
  • The Riverside Aquatic Center opens today from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will also operate May 24–25 before switching to full summer hours on June 6. Free splash pads at local parks are open today through Labor Day weekend.  KTIV
  • United Way of Siouxland activated its Recovery Fund on May 17 to aid Woodbury County residents after severe storms. Woodbury County Emergency Management hosted a recovery event on May 22 at the Pierson Community Center to help with applications and legal needs (no appointment required).  KTIV
  • Missouri River Historical Development awarded $500,000 to 35 local organizations on Thursday, May 21 with its Target Grant Program to support one-year projects that improve quality of life. Sioux City Community Theatre and LaunchPAD Children’s Museum are among the recipients for renovations and new exhibits (proposals totaled $2 million).  KTIV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Siouxland Splash confirmed that its new water park near Highway 75 & 41st will be delayed by four to six weeks; the delay comes after subcontractor meetings showed more time is needed for safe inspections and phased openings for what was planned for Memorial Day weekend.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sioux City Public Museum presents a new exhibit (Call To Arms: Sioux City in U.S. Military History) that runs through August and details local military service with insights from curator Matt Anderson.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux City West High seniors took a graduation walk (a trip down memory lane) through local elementary schools on Thursday, May 21, high-fiving students as they revisited the halls where they began; their graduation ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at Tyson Events Center.  KTIV
  • North Middle School 7th graders explored paleontology today during a presentation by High Plains Paleontology (a nonprofit organization) that featured real fossils and 3D printed displays.  KTIV
  • Sioux City Schools announced that North High's Molly Boatman, West High's Todd Siefker, and East High's Jacob Mattoon will deliver commencement speeches at upcoming graduation ceremonies, marking a milestone for graduates.  Sioux City Journal
  • Opportunities Unlimited distributed free bike helmets to students at Loess Hills Computer Programming Elementary School this spring as part of its 'Gotta Brain, Getta Helmet' program to promote helmet safety and reduce brain injuries, having given out over 1,600 helmets across Siouxland.  KTIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday night, spotters observed a funnel cloud touch down near Oto at 5:16 p.m. and another near Whiting shortly after 6:00 p.m., prompting a tornado warning for Woodbury County; no injuries or damage were reported.  KTIV
  • Sunday night storms toppled a tree near Moville, leaving an injured eaglet stranded after its nest fell. Wildlife rehabilitator Amanda Hase rescued the bird (it was dehydrated and had a broken leg) and treated it for future release.  KTIV
