COMMUNITY NEWS

  • STEMM is hosting a fundraiser for NW Iowa towns recently affected by tornadoes — the event will support recovery efforts as plans are finalized.  Sioux City Journal
  • Sioux City Transit will offer its 20th annual Kids Ride Free program during June, July and August to give students aged 5-18 unlimited free rides on fixed routes and a free bus piggy bank while supplies last. Passes can be picked up at select transit centers and libraries.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A University of Iowa law teacher will begin a one-credit business law course using the Magic: The Gathering card game next May. The course uses the game’s rules (a simple way to show how laws work) to help students learn legal skills.  KTIV
  • Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center (900 Larsen Park Road) has set its summer schedule and will offer classes, special activities and theatrical programs for children in kindergarten through eighth grade.  Sioux City Journal
  • South Sioux Community Schools now allow students to wear tribal regalia — a change championed by senior Tiala Luong — so Indigenous traditions are honored at graduation.  Sioux City Journal
  • Loess Hills Elementary gave students a petting zoo featuring goats, bunnies, and an alpaca after they helped raise $3K before school ends Friday, May 29 — an event that brought a farm experience to city kids.  KTIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • University of Iowa researchers have developed a method to capture water from air using a crystal lattice that expands under UV light to trap water molecules. The process, funded by a three-year ($500,000) National Science Foundation grant, could help ease water scarcity if it proves scalable and safe.  KTIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor candidate Randy Feenstra cast his ballot early at a Sioux County courthouse on Tuesday & said he will travel statewide to meet voters; today he holds his 'Rally with Randy' at Hawks Coffee Shop in Sergeant Bluff at 9 a.m. Other candidates plan events in Siouxland later this week.  KTIV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Reynolds signed new legislation on May 13 that will ban prior authorizations for cancer screenings and emergency services starting Jan. 1, easing paperwork for Iowa providers and speeding up care for patients.  KTIV
