COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Siouxland warns that proposed SNAP cuts may worsen food insecurity across Iowa—many families could soon face harder challenges accessing meals.  Sioux City Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Farmers in Northwest Iowa have planted 97% of corn and 95% of soybeans with sprouting rates of 85% and 70% respectively—both higher than state averages. Cooler, drier weather has reduced work days, so growers will wait for warmer, sunnier conditions before continuing field operations.  Sioux Country Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux City West High School conferred diplomas to graduates on May 28th+ at the Tyson Events Center+ marking the event as a key milestone in the academic year.  Sioux City Journal
  • Sioux City Community School District will offer its free summer meal program for children aged 1 to 18 starting June 9 at seven locations, serving meals Monday through Friday (with some sites ending on July 3 and others on August 1) and requiring meals to be eaten on site (all locations will be closed on July 4).  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On May 28, family and friends gathered at Bishop Heelan High School to send off 83 Sioux City National Guard members who are set for a one-year deployment to the Middle East for Operation Inherent Resolve. The ceremony was part of a larger mobilization of 1,800 soldiers + it highlighted the community’s support for their service.  SiouxlandProud
  • Sioux City officials say the watermain replacement project on Fairmount Street will begin early next month — the work is expected to update the local water supply system.  Sioux City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Union workers at Planned Parenthood North Central spoke out over layoffs and clinic closures that will affect four clinics in Iowa, including the Sioux City clinic set to close by July 1—66 staff members will be laid off while 37 are offered reassignments. Staff members criticized upper management for its lack of transparency following funding cuts and the recent presidential election.  SiouxlandProud
