COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Live kicked off its summer season Friday night on Historic 4th Street when Mississippi Heat played live music for a crowd gathered near the Sioux City Public Museum. The event will take place on the first Friday of each month, with the next three shows hosted at Crave & the Hilton Garden Inn starting at 6 p.m.  KTIV
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland has named Ciarra Prather as its new leader, effective June 30—Kristie Arlt will finish her work by the end of July when she moves to Omaha. Prather brings strong skills in sales, marketing and community work while Arlt thanked the community for her service.  SiouxlandProud
  • Sioux City Railroad Museum is recruiting older teens and young adults to volunteer as tour guides for its summer Walk n’ Talk Storytelling Tours four days a week—volunteers will share stories about the Milwaukee Railroad Repair Shops and local history. No experience is needed and interested individuals should attend a tour on Saturday or Sunday to speak with Founding Curator Larry Obermeyer about the opportunity—this chance connects community members to their rail heritage.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hy-Vee on Pierce Street announced it will close soon—company officials did not provide a timeline or details about the closure—and no further information has been released about future plans.  SiouxlandProud

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Marquee—a popular Sioux City music venue—will close its doors, ending years of live music shows. Officials have not yet announced details on the final closing date.  Sioux City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signed a bill on Friday that expands cancer coverage for first responders—firefighters and law enforcement—and ensures they receive better disability benefits when diagnosed with cancer. The law slightly raises employee retirement contribution rates to fund the changes.  KTIV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Ron Emmick, an 85-year-old Sioux City man and former welder, stays busy turning old farm tools and flea market finds into art — his work includes a tractor made from a mailbox and a flamingo built from horseshoes — and he is planning an auction for his creations.  KTIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Siouxland Sports Academy will move to a new facility that will replace its current arena at 4501 Southern Hills Drive. The $5 million Scheels Sports Complex, located near Lewis & Clark Park and Cone Park with five basketball courts, nine volleyball courts, a batting cage, a weight room, a dance academy, locker rooms & an outdoor patio, is set to break ground later this fall with a planned completion in 2026 after the June 9 land sale is approved.  SiouxlandProud
