COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Iowa Great Lakes Connection Trail held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Clay County section yesterday at 5:45 p.m. in Siouxland, where cyclists could begin at North School Park or at the Cooperative Energy parking lot—this new trail is part of a plan to eventually create a paved route from Okoboji to Des Moines.  SiouxlandProud

CRIME NEWS

  • An Omaha man was found guilty of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence after his car left I-29 near Salix in February 2023 and killed Ashley Bond, and on June 6 he was sentenced to 25 years in jail—he must also pay $150,000 to Bond’s family.  SiouxlandProud
  • Sioux City police are investigating BB gun pellet damage to businesses after a business owner flagged down an officer at 7:30 a.m. Friday—Community Policing Sgt. Tom Gill said.  Sioux City Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new art exhibit featuring Sioux City native Phyllis Bennett opens today at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in the Betty Strong Encounter Center. The exhibit will show her realistic acrylic and oil paintings until July 27—local visitors can see it free during normal hours.  SiouxlandProud

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Siouxland Splash waterpark will not open this summer due to significant inflation, shifting tariffs and supply chain challenges—project developers remain committed to fixing these issues and plan to set a new opening date soon.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux City Schools rejected bids to repair North High and West High School pools because the low bid was more than $200,000 above the estimate—district officials said they will seek new bidding options. The district plans to reassess repair options soon.  Sioux City Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation is transferring the former Little Sioux Scout Ranch to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources so the property will join Loess Hills State Forest and be open to the public in the near future.  Sioux City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Sioux City Engineering Division announced that construction on the Glen Oaks Boulevard Paving Project from Tenton Trace to Outer Drive will begin around June 16 and finish in October, replacing paving, driveway approaches, sidewalk ramps, and utilities. Residents are urged to follow a detour using Indian Hills Drive, Cheyenne Boulevard, and Outer Drive—details will be posted as needed.  SiouxlandProud
