COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials said two Siouxland communities are experiencing power outages—utility crews are working to restore service as residents wait for further updates.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • At Southern Hills Mall in Sioux City, a plus-sized clothing store will permanently close on June 24 as part of a company plan to cut underperforming stores—CEO Lisa Harper stated that nearly 180 locations will be shuttered in 2025 as digital sales grow.  SiouxlandProud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux City Public Library is continuing its yearly Read-To-Me-Dogs program—children practice reading to therapy dogs—and nearly 50 kids attended on Tuesday. The sessions will be held every Tuesday from 2 to 3 p.m. until July 1.  SiouxlandProud

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • South Sioux City built Nebraska’s first plastic road near Siouxland Freedom Park on Wednesday morning using two million recycled plastic bags — 15,000 of which were collected by Goodwill — mixed into a three-inch surface over a six and a half inch asphalt base along a half-mile stretch.  KTIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds vetoed a bill on Wednesday that would have required more rules on Summit Carbon Solutions’ major carbon capture pipeline project—she said the bill mixed good ideas with unclear rules. Some GOP lawmakers plan a special session to override her decision—while Summit said it will work with landowners to adjust its plans.  Sioux City Journal
  • The Woodbury County Board of Supervisors approved a $65,000 allocation for repairs at Little Sioux Park’s boat ramp — damaged by the June 2024 flooding. Work on the ramp is expected to begin next month — FEMA has already approved the funds for reimbursement.  SiouxlandProud

HEALTH NEWS

  • LifeServe Blood Center will host four blood drives in Woodbury County this July to meet the rising need for donated blood during summer. The drives are scheduled at UnityPoint Health St. Luke's on July 18 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the 185th Air Refueling Wing on July 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the MidAmerican Energy Service Center on July 23 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and at GELITA USA Inc. on July 28 from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.  SiouxlandProud
