COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Sioux City Public Museum will offer a free tour of the Peirce Mansion and its surrounding area on June 24 starting at 5 p.m. and will follow with a Jackson Street Walking Tour at 6:30 p.m.—the tours will let visitors learn about the local history and the role of developer John Peirce in shaping the city.  SiouxlandProud
  • Nothing Bundt Cakes held a grand opening with a ribbon cutting in Sioux City yesterday. Owner Melissa Hegarty said the shop donated 20% of the day's sales—supporting Siouxland Habitat for Humanity to help families build homes.  SiouxlandProud
  • Community members, families, and veterans gathered at Sunrise Retirement Community on Friday for the annual Flag Folding Ceremony where the 185th Air National Guard helped fold the flag—while participants sang songs, recited poems and reflected on the pledge's meaning. The event honored a long-standing local tradition with roots in the community's history.  KTIV
  • The Food Bank of Siouxland has surpassed its fundraising goal, showing strong community support & boosting its capacity to help local families. Organizers celebrate this milestone and plan future events to further serve the area.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Governor Reynolds signed Senate File 383 into law today to regulate pharmacy benefit managers so local pharmacies will not sell drugs at a loss. The Iowa Pharmacy Association says the law will help stabilize pharmacies and keep them open while Towncrest Pharmacy reported losing money and closing a Belle Plaine location—other states with similar laws have not seen higher costs.  KTIV

CRIME NEWS

  • Sioux City police arrested Lonzo Thomas, 35, early Friday morning on Veteran’s Memorial Bridge after receiving calls at 6:42 a.m. that he pointed a simulated handgun at vehicles and tried to flee when asked to drop his backpack—officials later said they recovered a glass pipe with residue inside.  SiouxlandProud
  • Phillip Plummer, 42, from Sioux City pleaded guilty to drug crimes after distributing meth near schools from 2022 to 2023—he was sentenced to 120 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release.  SiouxlandProud
  • Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales will begin his trial on June 16 at the Union County Courthouse in Elk Point on a charge of first-degree murder in connection with the April 2023 killing of Jordan Beardshear and will face a mandatory life sentence if convicted.  SiouxlandProud

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three seats on the Sioux City School Board will be contested in the November election, and they are currently held by board president Jan George and directors Dan Greenwell and Bob Michaelson. Anyone wishing to run must turn in a nomination petition by August 25 — followed by the affidavit of candidacy by September 18, with all paperwork due by 5 p.m. at the district’s educational service center, and each term lasts four years until 2029.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City officials reminded residents on June 13 that fireworks can only be set off on July 3 from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on July 4 from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and are banned in public parks and city property — violators may face fines from $250 to $500 while the city council reviews the rules.  SiouxlandProud
