COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials with Siouxland Humane Society said they were honored to win a Best Friends Animal Society award for a 99.04% no-kill rate in 2024—marking the third consecutive year of excellence since the shelter became no-kill in 2014.  SiouxlandProud

CRIME NEWS

  • Forty-two-year-old Dustin Allan Stienstra was sentenced to 30 days in jail—pending monthly payments of $250 and with 150 days suspended—for failing to pay court-ordered restitution from a 2004 case in Sioux County. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for July 2026 to review his progress and ensure he stays in contact with Iowa officials.  Sioux Country Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Sioux City officials proposed a buyout plan for 21 McCook Lake homeowners whose houses were lost in last summer’s flood; the plan will pay homeowners either twice the pre-flood land value or the full value minus demolition costs—whichever is greater—and details will be sent in the next five to seven days.  Sioux City Journal
  • Sioux City resident Christopher Prosch was nominated Tuesday evening as the GOP candidate for Iowa State Senate District 1 to fill the seat left vacant after the death of Rocky De Witt—Woodbury County Supervisor Dan Bittinger was also considered.  Sioux City Journal
  • Sioux City has secured $865K for the Big Sioux River levee extension project — estimated to cost over $2.65 million and take three years to complete from commencement to final FEMA map revisions.  Sioux City Journal
  • Iowa House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl announced his campaign for Iowa’s Fourth Congressional district via social media on July 9—he has served since 2009—and he emphasized his commitment to conservative values and tax cuts after incumbent Congressman Randy Feenstra announced his bid for governor, with Chris McGowan of the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce also entering the race.   SiouxlandProud
