- ➤ County fair season in Iowa brings many free events for local families. The events include Cow Appreciation Day at South Sioux City Public Library on July 8 at 6 p.m., an art walk at Sioux City Art Center on July 10, and a beer dinner featuring Divots Brewery and the Sandbar on July 11—additional shows, car events, and outdoor festivals are scheduled across the region. ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A firefighter was injured by a falling ceiling while fighting a house fire on the 500 block of East 25th Street in South Sioux City on Tuesday after 5 p.m.—he was taken to the hospital for a serious neck injury as officials quickly controlled the blaze and confirmed no civilians or pets were hurt. - ➤ Bill Brown, a Sioux City native and longtime owner of Bill's Bar, nearly retired when a January fire damaged the upper apartments and halted his plans to sell; now the community is holding a fundraiser on July 19 to help cover an estimated $80,000 repair cost—Brown will run the bar until his liquor license expires in May. - ➤ A Sioux City woman was sentenced to 51 months in prison, fined $1,400, and given a two-year term of supervised release on July 9 after pleading guilty to federal firearm charges that involved making false statements on ATF forms and straw purchases to help a prohibited individual—local authorities seized four firearms at her home as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods investigation. - ➤ Charese Yanney and Sydney McManamy-Hermann were named as the new Port Admiral and Commodore for River-Cade — a historic first — marking the first time two women have led the festival in its 61-year history. - ➤ Ryan De Kruyf was selected as the new Sioux County Emergency Management Coordinator and began his term on July 2—Nate Huizenga stepped back to focus on law enforcement duties after serving as both EMA Coordinator and Chief Deputy. Ryan brings over 20 years of emergency services experience, including responses to past floods, and he is expected to build on Huizenga’s work to keep Sioux County safe. KTIV
- ➤ Sioux County hired Ryan De Kruyf as its new emergency management coordinator on July 2 and he brings over 20 years of experience in emergency management, EMS and 911 dispatching. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Sioux City health officials report that emergency room visits from tick bites in the Midwest reached a record high this summer, with cases in July rising to 132 per 100,000 visits compared to 82 last year—Mariah Myers from the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center advises careful removal of ticks to avoid leaving mouth parts embedded.
