COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Crittenton Center was awarded over $21,000 in grants, with $20,000 from Le Mars United Way to support the Child Development Center and $1,660 from the United Airlines Trust Fund—administered through the Siouxland Community Foundation—to help fund CPR training and supplies for its Street Outreach Program. The funds will be used to maintain child care slots, offer tuition assistance, and reduce barriers for health screenings.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A FedEx shipping center at 4929 Harbor Drive will close on September 1 as part of its network transformation strategy — company officials said employees were notified months ago and many will be offered other roles. The closure is a step in its cost-cutting plan — which will combine its air, ground, and other services.  SiouxlandProud

CRIME NEWS

  • Sioux City woman Jessica Bino was found guilty of first-degree murder for beating and stabbing her grandmother Suzette Occhibone on Oct. 26, 2023 at their shared apartment at 607 Virginia St.  Sioux City Journal
  • A Sioux City woman, Jessica Bino (33), was found guilty Friday evening of first-degree murder for killing her grandmother, Suzette Occhibone, after she waived her right to a jury trial, and her sentencing is set for August 8 at the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center while her mother's trial for her alleged role in the attack in October 2023 remains pending.  SiouxlandProud
  • A South Sioux City woman accused of helping her estranged husband hide after a 2023 murder in Dakota Dunes was sentenced yesterday to three years in jail for accessory to felony and 180 days for false reporting — with 350 days of credit and the sentences running concurrently.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in South Sioux City said equipment issues delayed Friday's trash pickup so residents should leave their cans outside for collection today + the city is working to fix the problem.  SiouxlandProud
  • Iowa State Representative Travis Sitzmann announced his campaign for reelection as he seeks a second term representing House District 13. He won his seat in 2024 and said he is fully committed to serving his community—stressing his determination ahead of the race.  SiouxlandProud
  • The A-7 Corsair finished a repaint after spending 8 weeks at the 185th Paint Facility following its May relocation from the former Martin Airfield to the 185th Air Refueling Wing base. The plane will be moved in a couple months to display at Siouxland Freedom Park — a project managed by the National Guard.  SiouxlandProud

HEALTH NEWS

  • Measles cases are rising in Siouxland as South Dakota recorded 12 cases—10 in unvaccinated individuals—with one hospitalization, and Iowa and Nebraska confirmed three and one cases respectively. Health officials opened vaccination clinics across the region to help control the outbreak.  SiouxlandProud
