- ➤ After more than 10 years of operation, Jackson Street Brewing announced plans to open a second location at 901 5th Street—just a few blocks from its main spot at 607 5th Street. The new site will offer a taproom, pizza and pub fare, a party room, a large patio and a brewing facility—while the original location remains open to serve food from El Comal. SiouxlandProud
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Sioux City woman, 34-year-old Alesha Rasmussen, pleaded guilty to distributing methamphetamine on February 10 and was sentenced on July 18 to more than five years in prison—she had a 2011 conviction for manufacturing methamphetamine and violated her supervised release conditions multiple times. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sparks flew Tuesday as kids ages 10 to 16 learned welding skills at Western Iowa Tech Community College’s free camp, funded by the Scene of the Crash Car Club — the camp is in its third year — and officials said the training builds essential skills for future jobs. SiouxlandProud
- ➤ Garrett Schmidt is the new superintendent at Dakota Valley School District and he said he will be out in the community to learn from students, staff and parents—he previously taught at local schools and values being hands-on. The district will start classes on Aug 18 and focus on technology use and student mental health—key priorities for the upcoming school year. KTIV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Murray Street in Sioux City is closed between Harbor Drive and S. Patton Street for emergency sewer repairs (a detour via Bridgeport Drive is posted) and city officials expect the repairs to finish by July 28. SiouxlandProud
- ➤ Woodbury County supervisors held their first public hearing Tuesday on zoning changes for nuclear energy and nuclear waste storage after a large manufacturing project was lost due to insufficient power capabilities + community members voiced concerns and the board set further public comment for July 29 and August 5. - ➤ Sioux City is hosting the IHSAA Class 3A and 4A state baseball tournament at Lewis & Clark Park for the first time. Organizers worked hard to bring the event here and they plan to showcase local athletic talent. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ A 24-hour game of catch challenge for the Miracle League finished Tuesday afternoon in Sioux City with about 400 participants and nearly 10,000 throws, including those from former MLB player Scott Spiezio. Event founder Kevin Negaard said he would do it again after some rest — he is still waiting for the final tally to see if his $100k goal was met. SiouxlandProud
