  • Camp High Hopes in Sioux City offers a summer program that helps kids overcome challenges and build social skills through engaging activities—volunteers work daily to support campers and organize special events.   • Basil, a 1 to 2-year-old male Mastiff mix, has been at the shelter for more than four months and does well with adults and older kids but not with other dogs or cats—he is now ready for adoption.  SiouxlandProud

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Sioux City has opened a new event space called Encore Hall. The 2,859-square-foot hall, built over three years, will host meetings and celebrations — featuring audio-visual setups and customizable lighting.  SiouxlandProud

CRIME NEWS

  • A Sioux City man, Romario Pierre-Louis, pleaded guilty on March 6 to possessing a firearm as a felon after he allegedly pointed a gun at people during an October 15, 2024 disturbance and was sentenced on July 18 to five years and three months in prison plus a three-year supervised release—authorities recovered his concealed weapons from a neighbor’s home.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mural artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen is launching his Medal of Honor Murals project in Sioux City, where his first mural honoring Brigadier General George “Bud” Day will be installed along Highway 20 to commemorate 66 Iowa Medal of Honor recipients. He is working with the Iowa DOT—planning placements on 16-foot-tall by 8-foot-wide concrete columns and seeking corporate sponsors so the project can be completed before America’s 250th birthday.  KTIV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A USDA report shows pork prices in California have risen 19% over the past year as producers in Iowa and other states face higher costs to meet Proposition 12 standards. U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson is set to sponsor the Save Our Bacon Act—allowing producers to follow state regulations rather than external mandates.  KTIV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City residents and a local non-profit helped the Iowa Environmental Council install PurpleAir monitors to track air quality after the group faced funding shortfalls. The monitors showed unhealthy spikes in particulate matter that may harm those with breathing problems — and officials say more community help is needed near local industry.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eric Swanson, the interim city manager from Phoenix who grew up in the Siouxland area, discussed his 90-day financial priorities with council members on Thursday—he highlighted challenges that impact the city’s tax-raising efforts. The other finalists, Craig Clark and Andrew Barden, will interview today at 1 p.m. at City Hall.  SiouxlandProud
