COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Aug 1, the non-profit Center for Siouxland celebrated 50 years in Sioux City by marking its growth from a travel aid created with community partners to a center that now helps low-income families and seniors plus runs a housing program with 22 single-room occupancy units at Bridges West, offering case management to vulnerable residents.  KTIV
  • At the Dakota Thurston County Fair in South Sioux City, four-H members showed various livestock on Friday while the fair continues through Sunday (free entry and parking are offered), giving families a chance to learn about animal care. Leader Martey Stewart, with nearly 60 years in 4-H, said the fair teaches important lessons to local youth.  SiouxlandProud

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sioux Center was named a 2026 Iowa Thriving Community—this recognition comes from its strong efforts to boost housing options through local partnerships, policies, and investments. The city saw new families and units added in 2024 and has plans for more housing today.  SiouxlandProud
  • Starting August 4, Northshore Drive in North Sioux City will be closed for grading, operations and concrete paving at its intersection with Penrose Drive—detours using Westshore Drive and Union County Highway 105 will remain in place until August 15 or when work is complete. BNSF said the Big Sioux River rail bridge is expected to open this weekend to handle increased rail traffic.  SiouxlandProud
  • Sioux City candidate Catelin Drey announced her run for the District One Senate seat following Senator Rocky DeWitt’s death in June—voters in Sioux City and northern Woodbury County will choose their new senator later this month with absentee ballots available until August 11 and in-person voting starting August 6.  SiouxlandProud
  • Iowa's Department of Health and Human Services has named Lee Grossman, a native with over 14 years of experience as Medicaid director in Wyoming, as the new director of Iowa Medicaid and he will begin his role in early September to manage new work requirements and spending cuts. This appointment follows a nationwide search after the previous director's departure and comes as the program supports more than 700,000 Iowans.  Sioux City Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Sioux City-based Iowa Poison Control Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month and has provided lifesaving information since 2000 with trained nurses and pharmacists answering calls 24/7 from the MidAmerican Energy building downtown—helping Iowans with hospital referrals and follow-up calls on about 23,000 cases each year.  SiouxlandProud

  • Sioux City pool experts said that almost three inches of rain over the last week may have affected pool pH levels and led to early signs of algae growth. Pool owners are advised to test water and adjust chemicals to protect filtration & pool structure before winterizing.  SiouxlandProud
