CRIME NEWS

  • Sioux City sex offender Hulit was sentenced to federal prison after authorities arrested him on November 18 in Winnebago, Nebraska—he was found living on the Winnebago Indian Reservation, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.  Sioux City Journal
  • Taxavier Ford, a 29-year-old Alta man, pleaded guilty on Aug. 11 in federal court to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm after officers pulled him over in Storm Lake for tinted windows; a search uncovered a loaded gun—he remains free on bond awaiting sentencing and faces up to 15 years and a $250,000 fine.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Gilchrist Foundation recently awarded a $20,000 grant to the Mass Communication Department at WIT to cover startup costs for a new student-run radio station—this project will give local students hands-on experience in media production.  Sioux City Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A proposal for a 2,900-acre, 360-megawatt solar farm in rural Dakota County is raising strong concerns among residents who worry the project will change their quiet countryside. Public hearings at Hubbard Community Center on Aug. 19 and subsequent county decisions will determine the future of the project—local questions focus on land values and the visual impact of solar panels.  Sioux City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kim Reynolds announced that 20 Iowa National Guard soldiers will deploy on Sept. 8 to support ICE officials enforcing federal immigration laws under federal Title 32 authority. Immigrant rights advocates warn that the move may risk civil liberties.  Sioux City Journal

  • Sioux City purchased three pieces of land from the county for supportive housing—city officials will develop the property soon to meet future needs.  Sioux City Journal
