CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Starting Sept. 1, the Sioux City Railroad Museum will be open only on weekends—Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.—due to unresolved flood damage and repair costs exceeding $2 million. The museum also urges local support through donations and volunteer work to help preserve its railroad history. KTIV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Daniel Herfel of Sioux City won a $50,000 Powerball prize after matching four of the five white balls and the Powerball in the Aug. 20 drawing — he was one number away from a much larger jackpot. Sioux City Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Iowa faces a teacher shortage as the new school year begins with over 660 full-time positions unfilled—local educators report that an additional 3,000 vacancies in subjects like English, science, math and special education are stretching teachers to their limits. Many say larger class sizes and limited support are causing some to move to states with less strict policies. KTIV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At Tuesday’s Tri-State Governors’ Conference in Dakota Dunes, Governors Reynolds, Pillen and Rhoden discussed regional infrastructure challenges including the underfunded wastewater treatment upgrade in Sioux City and the planned $91.8 million runway replacement for the 185th Air Refueling Wing. Pillen argued that large companies should help cover costs & local leaders emphasized pursuing federal funds and a flood protection study along the Big Sioux River. Sioux City Journal
