COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of Siouxland runs its Food4Kids program at Morningside Elementary School, giving families food boxes every month to fight hunger. Volunteers and local partners have served over 558 kids in 209 households so far this year—meeting a clear need in the community.  KTIV

  • The second Chick-fil-A restaurant in Sioux City has set its grand opening date — it will welcome customers when it opens.  Sioux City Journal
  • McDonald's opened its seventh restaurant in Sioux City today along Floyd Boulevard— beating offers from Domino's and Arby's franchisees to secure the land.  Sioux City Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sioux City Art Center is preparing for its 31st ArtSplash in downtown Sioux City from Saturday, Sept. 13 to Sunday, Sept. 14 with over 70 artist booths and set hours of 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday — organizers changed the schedule from Labor Day weekend and will offer beer and hard seltzers on Saturday starting at 4 p.m.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Terry A. Murrell of Western Iowa Tech Community College announced his retirement, effective May 15, 2026, after serving as president since 2011. The board will begin searching for a new leader later in 2025—his tenure saw the school nearly triple its graduation rate while adding athletics, food services, and mental health support.  KTIV
  • Siouxland Christian School opened its new junior and senior high building at 5969 Gordon Drive, a remodeled former Dunham's store where students and teachers have been using modern, glass-walled classrooms and collaborative spaces since Aug. 28—construction on the kitchen, dining area, and additional phases is ongoing pending donor support. The facility also features state-of-the-art science labs and improved security designs developed with local law enforcement to serve its growing student body.  Sioux City Journal
  • On Monday, the Sioux City School Board voted 6-0 to approve a five-year lease with Verizon to build a stealth cell phone tower near Perry Creek Elementary. The board also set a public hearing on September 22 at 6 p.m. to review Morningside University’s plan to use East High’s baseball field for eight years — with the proposal including artificial turf installation and shared repair costs.  KTIV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors approved a contract to demolish the old Law Enforcement Center on 7th street downtown while setting aside about one million dollars from the county budget. The demolition plans will be outlined in the next two to three months and demolition is expected to take three to four months—after which the property will revert to Sioux City.  KTIV
  • On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Iowa Transportation Commission approved $4.8 million—using funds from Revitalize Iowa’s Sound Economy—to build a new exit on I-29 about two miles south of the Sergeant Bluff rest area in Woodbury County. The project will connect Port Neal Road with Old Highway 75 and is expected to be finished by December 2027.  KTIV
  • At its Sept 9 meeting, Sioux City's Planning and Zoning Commission discussed converting Coles Addition Park on lots 801 and 811 Pacific Street to single-family housing or townhouses because the park is minimally used — and the proposal will be reviewed by the City Council on Sept 22.  KTIV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tickets for the Harlem Globetrotters game will go on sale Monday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Prime Bank Box Office at the Tyson Events Center and the team will play the Washington Generals on March 4 at 7 p.m. while debuting its new 100 Year jerseys—offering fans pre-game experiences and a free 5th Quarter Autograph session.  KTIV
  • Tanner Mackey from Pierson will try to break the Guinness record for the fastest 10k while wearing a 20-pound vest at Sioux City's Mighty Mo Run on Sept. 13 at 7:30 a.m.—he is preparing by gathering official timing, scale documentation, and witness statements for his record attempt.  KTIV
