COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A National Honor Society project at Sioux City East High School created sensory bags that help first responders support individuals with sensory issues. The kits include earphones, sunglasses, pictographs in English and Spanish, and a whiteboard with dry erase markers—officials say they ease communication in emergencies.  KTIV
  • Little Sioux Park has seen nearly two years of work that added a new concession stand, kayak rentals, upgraded sewer hookups, fiber optic wi-fi, and resurfaced roads—Director Dan Heissel said the park is now unmatched in the region. Additional improvements are set to continue this fall as workers plan to remove dead trees and repair trails and facilities once further funding is available.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The deadline to file for three Sioux City school board seats is Thursday — candidates must submit their paperwork by that day to be considered.  Sioux City Journal
  • Monday afternoon, the Sioux City School Board ended its special session abruptly when a vote for a closed session failed to get a two-thirds majority—leaving key differences unresolved.  Sioux City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sioux City Council approved a $3 million downtown property resolution — a decision expected to guide future development downtown — during its recent meeting.  Sioux City Journal
  • On Sept. 15, Woodbury County issued marriage licenses listing couples from Sioux City and Iowa. The records include names such as Katibree Orndorff and Cordell Hutson Jr.—reflecting busy county government activity.  Sioux City Journal
  • Catelin Drey was sworn in as Iowa State Senator Monday morning—she won a special election to fill the seat left by Rocky De Witt in Senate District 1 covering parts of Sioux City and Lawton—and pledged to boost public education funding and address an affordability crisis for local families.  KTIV
