COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Guiding Star Siouxland is hosting its first community outreach diaper giveaway event at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.—the nonprofit, which provides free women’s health services, also accepts diaper and wipe donations at several Orange City locations and plans more outreach events to help families in need. - ➤ Sioux City will host its seventh Alley Art Festival tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in downtown alleys, adding nearly 30 new murals to the 150 that already decorate the area—featuring live music, a vendor fair, and an interactive zone for children. Sioux City Journal

- ➤ Seven candidates for the Sioux City school board were announced Thursday — they will vie for three open seats in the November election. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ A new book titled Pursuing the Light chronicles Northwestern College’s growth from a classical academy to a modern institution with 1,700 students and 16,000 alumni. It will be available for $25 at the Northwestern Bookstore and online starting October 1st — sold at Raider Nation Celebration on October 4th and a program at Orange City’s Dutch American Heritage Museum on October 7th. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City workers in South Sioux City will erect signage and barricades on Monday to begin work on permanently closing Old Dakota Avenue at Riverview Drive. Sioux City Journal
- ➤ State officials awarded more than $1.3 million through the Homelessness Prevention Fund on September 18 to northwest Iowa groups, giving over $80,000 to Upper Des Moines Opportunity for counties including Buena Vista, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Palo Alto, and Pocahontas & $65,000 to Family Crisis Centers for counties such as Cherokee, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola, Plymouth, and Sioux to help keep families in their homes.
