COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Morningside University hosted its 19th annual Into the Streets event with over 750 students and 75 faculty volunteering at local organizations—detailing police vehicles, serving breakfast to veterans, and honoring first responders and healthcare workers for 9/11 commemoration. Interim President Chad Benson joined students to lead by example in supporting various community service efforts.  KTIV

CRIME NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Sept. 23, over 100 dogs were rescued from a home in Plymouth County when local agencies worked together; the Siouxland Humane Society took in 12 dogs for grooming and adoption while the Animal Rescue League of Iowa received 99 dogs—conditions at the property were toxic and an investigation remains ongoing.  KTIV

CULTURE NEWS

  • After heavy June 2024 rains flooded the Big Sioux River and caused over $3 million in damage, the Sioux City Railroad Museum has limited its hours to weekends since Sept 1 and relies on volunteers to clean artifacts—while it raises funds for repairs including a needed $50,000 fix for its steam locomotive. The museum has also applied for a $1.6 million federal grant to cover repairs over a 36-month period.  Sioux City Journal
  • The Annual Rainbow of Gems Show will take place this weekend with events on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cottonwood Inn & Conference Center at 4401 Dakota Ave.  Sioux City Journal
  • T.J. Obermeyer—executive director of the Sioux City Railroad Museum—said that repair work is still needed to fix damage from last summer’s Big Sioux River flood.  Sioux City Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux County youth will join National 4-H Week October 5-11 to learn through clubs, camps, and hands-on projects like public speaking, STEM, and livestock. Youth coordinator Jade Bakker said the event will prepare participants to become confident leaders in their communities.  Sioux Country Radio
