COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hy-Vee is launching additional food assistance starting November 3 to help families during a government shutdown that leaves nearly 267,000 SNAP recipients without benefits. The grocery chain will offer free meals to kids 12 and under from 4 to 7 p.m.—with $3 meals for others—and will introduce donation bundles on Friday for delivery to local food pantries.  KTIV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sioux City Public Library invites residents to cast a vote for the next Sioux City Reads title for 2026 until November 30—from three mystery options. The book that receives the most votes will drive program events and discussions — with the title announced in January.  KTIV
  • The Sioux City Education Association endorsed newcomers Cyndi Hanson + Jebediah Hibbs + Christian Supiot Perez for the school board election. The move may sway local votes as the race continues to heat up.  Sioux City Journal
  • Iowa education associations + nonprofits warned that the planned pause in federal SNAP funding will hurt K-12 students. The lapse, scheduled to begin this weekend, may reduce access to vital food support for students.  Sioux City Journal
  • Seven candidates (AJ Cecil-Starlin, Jan George, Dan Greenwell, Cyndi Hanson, Jebediah Hibbs, Bob Michaelson and Christian Supiot Perez) are running for seats on the Sioux City Community school board and have participated in Q&A sessions to present their plans for improving local education.  Sioux City Journal
  • The Sioux City Public Library is promoting literacy with the Morningside StoryWalk that sets up 22 aluminum stands along Peters Park walking path to show pages from a selected book—drawing local interest—and giving residents a chance to read outdoors.  Sioux City Journal

  • Sioux City Mayor’s Youth Commission is now accepting applications from 9th and 10th graders living or going to school in Sioux City with the deadline extended to Nov. 10 — the new term starts Jan. 1.  KTIV
